Dr. Umesh Gautam (born 30 June 1970) is an Indian politician, education entrepreneur, and the current Mayor of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. He serves as the Chancellor of Invertis University, which he founded in 1998. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dr. Gautam has been serving as Mayor since 2017 and was re-elected for a second term in 2023.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Umesh Gautam was born on 30 June 1970 in Uttar Pradesh, India. He spent his childhood in various parts of India as his father, K.K. Gautam, served in the police force and had a transferrable position. This exposure to different regions of India during his formative years shaped his understanding of diverse cultures and administrative systems.

He completed his schooling from different parts of the country due to his father’s frequent transfers. After completing his Class 12th from Badaun, near Bareilly, he pursued his graduation in Commerce (B.Com) from Moradabad. Later, he shifted his base to Ghaziabad to complete his MBA, which laid the foundation for his future entrepreneurial ventures.

Dr. Gautam holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree and has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate (Ph.D.) in recognition of his contributions to education and society. He is often recognized as one of the youngest Chancellors in the Indian higher education sector.

Career

Education Entrepreneur

Dr. Umesh Gautam began his professional journey as a Trainee Manager in an export firm during his MBA days. Coming from a family predominantly in government services, he was the first member to venture into business and entrepreneurship without a mentor to guide him.

In 1998, Dr. Gautam founded the Invertis Institute of Management Studies in Bareilly with just 83 students. Recognizing the challenges faced by students in accessing quality higher education in North India, he established what would eventually become one of the leading private universities in the region. The institute started small but grew exponentially under his visionary leadership.

Today, Invertis University has grown into a comprehensive educational institution with over 6,000 students enrolled in various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. The university offers courses in Engineering, Management, Law, Agriculture, Pharmacy, and various other disciplines.
